A mysterious long-haired hunk once dominated the covers of steamy romance novels, his chiseled features sparking fantasies for millions of readers. But for years, the man behind those swoon-worthy images had no idea he was secretly becoming a global heartthrob.
For countless romance readers in the late 1980s and 1990s, the cover was everything. Before the first page was even turned, one striking image promised passion, adventure, and a dangerously handsome hero.
With flowing hair, a sculpted jawline, and a muscular physique, the iconic cover model became the ultimate symbol of romantic fantasy for an entire generation.
His face appeared everywhere — splashed across paperbacks stacked in bookstores, grocery aisles, and bedside tables around the world. Readers imagined him as the brooding hero sweeping women off their feet in countless love stories. But behind the scenes, the man whose face launched thousands of fantasies had no idea what was happening.
The Night Everything Suddenly Made Sense
At the height of his modeling career, the cover star had spent about a year and a half posing for photo shoots, completely unaware that those photos were being used on romance novels. It wasn’t until one unexpected night in Miami that the truth finally came crashing in.
During a 2021 interview on “PEOPLE in the ’90s,” he revealed how a chance encounter at a nightclub left him utterly stunned.
“Three girls come up to me and they go, ‘Oh my God. You look exactly like the guy on our books.’ And I’m like, ‘Honey, that’s a great pick-up line.’ Like, ‘Oooh I like you, I’ve never heard that before,'” he recalled with a laugh.

At first, he brushed off the comment, assuming the women were simply flirting. But they insisted they were serious. “And they go like ‘No, no. Trust me, it’s no pick-up line. You like exactly like the guy on my books,'” he explained. “I was skeptical. I had no idea because I was thinking [they were just taking] pictures. So, I didn’t know what they were doing [with the pictures] after.”
Determined to prove their point, one of the women left the club entirely. “So, at that point, one of the girls goes, ‘Well, how long are you going to be here?’ I said, ‘I just got here.’ She goes, ‘I live about 20 minutes from the club. I’m going to go home, pick up all my books, and I’m going to come back and show you, I’m not lying to you,'” he recounted.

When she returned, the shocking truth was undeniable. “So, they came back like, ‘Look, look.’ And I go like, ‘Oh my God, that’s me,'” he said. “The first time when I saw those books … I remember this one and that one and that one. And I go like, ‘Yeah, that’s me. That’s weird.'”
Fans Still Can’t Get Enough, but Not Everyone Agrees
Decades later, the former romance cover sensation still sparks strong reactions online. Many fans continue to admire the man who once embodied their fictional dream hero.
“Man, this guy seems respectful, well-grounded, down-to-earth, genuine nice guy…” one person wrote. Another admirer added, “Can’t believe he’s still big and has the same hair.”

Others were quick to praise how well he has aged. “He still looks good for his age,” one fan said. Another commented, “We all loved Fabio, and because he was on the cover of romance books, they flew off the shelves.” One admirer wrote, “Wow, still fine. Still, not everyone was convinced that the legendary look has stood the test of time. “What looked good when he was young is not cute anymore…sorry, hair would look better shorter…” one netizen said.

The man behind those unforgettable images is Fabio Lanzoni, widely known simply as Fabio. Born in Milan, Italy, Fabio first launched his career in Europe as a fashion model before transitioning into the world of book cover photography. It proved to be a career-defining move.
Over time, he appeared on more than 1,300 romance novel covers, making him one of the most recognizable faces in the genre and a defining symbol of romantic fantasy publishing.

Reflecting on the powerful connection readers felt with those covers, Fabio once explained why they resonated so deeply.
“When you read the book, you really have your own fantasy,” he said. “Worldwide, you have so many women who are not happy with their relationship, not happy with their life. They want to escape their reality, and this is their escape.”
From Skeptical Father to Proud Supporter
Fabio’s rise to fame began during the late 1980s. At the time, he was already a successful model working with major brands like Gap and Versace. Yet his career choice was not immediately welcomed at home.

His father, a mechanical engineer, initially disapproved of modeling altogether. “My father was a very conservative man. He called me a mannequin, ‘You don’t want to be a mannequin,'” Fabio recalled.
His father hoped he would pursue a more traditional profession, but Fabio stayed the course and eventually proved him wrong. In 1993, when Fabio appeared on the cover of PEOPLE magazine, the moment changed everything.
“For the first time in my life, my father said to me, ‘Fabio, I’m wrong,'” he said. “You really made it. I’m very proud of you. I was wrong, and you were right.”

From Romance Covers to Quiet Living
These days, Fabio lives a far quieter life. Now in his mid-60s, he describes himself as semi-retired and focused on maintaining his health and enjoying life. “I have the most beautiful life, I am healthy, I am in good shape, I eat well, I work out every day,” he said.
Though he joked that he might return to modeling if the right opportunity came along, he suggested his days of appearing on romance novel covers are mostly behind him.

Besides building a successful career, Fabio has also faced hardships in his personal life. He revealed that he lost his sister to cancer, which was an experience that strengthened his commitment to supporting cancer research. “There are so many illnesses out there,” he stated. “We have the potential as people to make a difference.”
