NYPD Officer Killed in Midtown Shooting Was Expecting Third Child Officer Didarul Islam, 36, was shot and killed during a mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan while working an off-duty job as a private security guard. He was in full NYPD uniform at the time of the attack. Islam was a father of two young boys, and his wife—currently eight months pregnant—is expecting their third child.

Islam, originally from Bangladesh, had been with the NYPD since December 2021 and was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx. He took on additional work to support his growing family. On the night of the shooting, he was providing security at a building that houses major offices, including the NFL and Blackstone.

The shooter, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, entered the lobby carrying an M4-style assault rifle equipped with a silencer, strap, and scope. Tamura opened fire, killing five people in total, including Officer Islam. He later took his own life on the 33rd floor of the building, where Blackstone’s offices are located. Authorities believe the gunman may have been targeting the NFL’s office, but this is still under investigation.

Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Officer Islam as a true hero who died protecting others. Tisch stated that he “died as he lived: a hero,” while Adams described him as a man of faith and commitment who deeply loved New York City. Tributes have poured in from fellow officers, local officials, and members of the Bangladeshi-American community.

Islam was remembered not only as a devoted officer but also as a mentor and role model for young people in his community. Friends and family noted his work ethic and deep dedication to providing a better future for his children.

Two additional individuals were taken into custody at the scene for questioning. The investigation into the shooter’s motive and possible connections is ongoing.
