But according to sources familiar with the decision, the tipping point came during a tense House hearing when a lawmaker asked Noem directly about her alleged relationship with longtime Trump adviser Corey Lewandowski.
The Question That Shocked a Congressional Hearing
The controversy erupted during a dramatic House Judiciary Committee hearing when Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove confronted Noem with a question that immediately stunned the room.
“So, Secretary Noem, at any time during your tenure as director of Department of Homeland Security, have you had sexual relations with Corey Lwendowski?” Kamlager-Dove asked during the hearing.

“Mr. Chairman, I am shocked that we’re going down and peddling tabloid garbage in this committee today,” Noem responded. “Ma’am, one thing that I would tell you is that he is a special government employee who works for the White House. There are thousands of them in the federal government.”
But when Noem did not directly answer the explosive question, Kamlager-Dove interrupted and pressed further. “It is okay for you to be offended by the question. But it is also a real question, and you should be able to answer the question clearly and without any hesitation,” she said.
The congresswoman then doubled down on her argument. “If someone is asking if you or any federal official is sleeping with their subordinate, you should be wanting to answer that question, because it is not about your sex life, it is about your judgment,” she added.
